Educational Assessments

Dyslexia . Dysgraphia . Dyscalculia . Specific Learning Disorders . Severe Language.

Educational assessments are provided to children, adolescents and adults (from 6 years onward). The assessment provides information about a person’s learning style, thinking, abilities as well as literacy skills. They are used to diagnose specific learning disorders such as dyslexia, dysgraphia, and dyscalculia.

An educational assessment measures a student’s academic skills and cognitive ability. It measures academic skills such as reading, spelling, mathematics, writing, and oral language. It also measures cognitive abilities such as verbal comprehension, visual spatial, fluid reasoning, working memory and processing speed skills.

If an individual is experiencing learning problems (e.g., reading difficulties), an assessment also helps in identifying their learning strengths as well as their weaknesses that are contributing to their learning problems. Assessment results provide information essential for the development of personalised learning plans and interventions.

The assessment process varies depending on the reasons for needing an assessment, but will include consultation, classroom observation, cognitive, educational, social, emotional and behavioural assessments, as appropriate.

After the assessment is administered a report is provided 2 to 4 weeks later (provided all questionnaires are completed within a week of the assessment by the carers/guardians and teachers. Depending on the results, the report may include recommendations for further assessment by other professionals such as behavioural optometrists, educational audiologists, paediatricians, occupational therapists and speech therapists.
