ADHD Assessment
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. Oppositional Defiant Disorder
An ADHD assessment aims to understand an individual’s developmental history, their current symptoms, and how their symptoms impact on daily functioning. We use this information to determine whether an individual meets diagnosis for ADHD. Following this, the psychologist may recommend a treatment plan, which may include psychoeducation and psychological interventions. Sometimes, the assessing psychologist may recommend that the person is referred to a psychiatrist for medication.
These assessments go beyond simply identifying symptoms and aim to assess the specific behavioural patterns, strengths, and challenges. They can also include investigation into other concurrent academic or learning difficulties. A combination of standardised rating scales, interviews, direct observations, and cognitive tests to gather relevant information are used in assessing ADHD. These assessments help determine the presence and severity of ADHD symptoms, evaluate the impact on various areas of life (such as academics, relationships, and daily functioning), and identify any co-occurring conditions or factors that may contribute to the individual's difficulties. By conducting ADHD assessment, we can then develop a tailored intervention plan, make appropriate treatment recommendations, and provide targeted support to individuals with ADHD, empowering them to thrive and reach their potential.
Key components of an ADHD Assessment include:
An interview,
Administering specific questionnaires,
Administering a cognitive assessment (an assessment that evaluates cognitive abilities), and
Gathering relevant information from other sources and people (with the individual or parent consent).
